Dutch healthcare ‘best in Europe’

Despite having one of the lowest expenditure on drugs, the Dutch healthcare system has topped a European survey which looked at access to treatment, waiting times and outcome.

‘It is justified to say the Dutch have the best healthcare system in Europe,’ Johan Hjertqvist from the private Swedish firm HCP which compiled the list, told Reuters news agency.

HCP said that offering a variety of options for healthcare insurance, which the Netherlands does, seems to produce better results than when there is only a single healthcare provider, reports Reuters.

However there are reports that patients in the Netherlands can pay to jump waiting queues at hospitals. Click here (http://www.dutchnews.nl/news/archives/2008/11/patients_can_pay_to_jump_waiti.php)to read this story

This shows how crappy it is in other countries because even though we have the best healthcare of Europe, almost every Dutch person can tell you a story about the hospitals making mistakes (and not little mistakes).

It makes me wonder how bad healthcare is in the rest of Europe.
