I like to feed sunflowers to the black-capped chickadees and nuthatches. I enjoy seeing those hardy little birds all year round here in Alaska. Of course, they don't need me to feed them as they are so good at surviving, it just brings them within easy viewing of my windows.

I also end up feeding a lot of magpies and ravens who like to browse my compost pile in the winter. I love the range of sounds these huge ravens make when they vocalize and also the sound of their wings as they fly nearby.

Yes I also like to feed birds in the winter. They are very fun to watch and you kinda get to know each one of them by sight. The nuthacht is one of my favorites and the Blue Jay.

bird feeding

For me
The greatest gift is to feed the birds all year round.
As the birds represent the diety powers of the northern way
and by giving to them freely and asking for nothing in its return is the greatest gift I can give to them which represents love.
They feed from the earth which is the aquiring of earth wisdom they sit in the trees which is the cosmic connection and they fly into heaven which is the drawing down power of the cosmic conciousness.
Have you ever seen how they start their prayers in the morning?
They sing the most beautifull songs to the rising sun
what a wonderful experience its magical.

Winter & Summer, too.

In Winter I feed the seed eaters, and the woodpeckers.
I feed Oil sunflower seed and mixed seed, mostly white millet, 50# of each, every other week. I also feed the Finches, especially Goldfinches. I buy Nijer seed by the 50#'s too. But a 50# bag of Nijer will last me a month.
We have a lot of goldfinches, nuthatches, chickadees, various sparrows, & finches, cardinals, blue-jays and the little crested titmouses.

In addition, I have feeders for Suet cakes, that have the box on top and wire opening on the bottom, so the starlings can't get the Suet.
I have several species of woodpeckers as well as flickers & sapsuckers that like Suet.
I begin Winter feeding about 1 November and end about 1 May.

In April I begin putting out Hummingbird feeders. We only have the Ruby throats. But, we have a lot of them, as many as 50 to 60 around our deck, at a time. At the height of the season, I use as much as 10#'s of sugar, made into syrup with water at, 1 : 3 1/2 proportions 1 qt of sugar to 3 1/2 qt. of water. They are so loud in the evening on the deck it sounds like motors running.

It is all a great hobby. It gets expensive, though.

I must not feed, because there are many cats nearby. They catch many birds a year, so it is better not to attract birds here with food.

I do, because birds come often at my window, and I find a use for the leftover bread which I don't eat anymore. Besides bread, I give them seeds.

Yes, always do. I love our feathered friends and they have such a hard time in winter and many freeze to death very fast unless they find some food, especially the tiniest ones.

I always start rather early, as soon as the nights are getting cold, because many don't feed them at that time. My "restaurant" is always full.

In most areas where there are people there will also be cats. You can't stop feeding because of that, but you should minimize the risks for the birds by placing the food in such a way that the cats can't reach the birds while they are feeding. Placing the food in proper seed containers high up on small branches/twigs where cats can't reach them is the best.

Birds will always be vulnerable when they look for food, especially on the ground, but that is nature. Should they stop looking for food just because there are hunters? I think not. Then they die. Making it easier for birds to find food in winter is the only right thing to do because so many starve to death and freeze to death during cold nights due to lack of food.

Those round fat balls you also have to hang on very weak twigs so the larger birds can't sit on them and get access to the small birds' food. These larger birds are quite intelligent and I have seen them putting one foot on the string and lifting the ball with the other one and the beak. They can eat one small ball in no time at all if the twig the ball is attached to is only strong enough to hold their weight.

On my grandmother's poultry-run, these birds find enough feed, in a relatively safe environment. Cocks do not allow cats to close the territory, but do not hurt little birds. And those birds eat very much. The bare tree's branches are full of sparrows (or other birds) in these times.
