Irreligiousness: the European Exception

The European Exception

A quote from a study by the Bertelsmann Foundation, 10 July 2008

Worldwide, more than four out of five young adults (85 percent) are religious and almost half (44 percent) are deeply religious. Only 13 percent have no appreciation for God or faith in general. However, there are large differences between individual countries and among the various denominations. Whereas young adults in Islamic states and developing countries in particular are deeply religious, young Christians in Europe especially are comparatively unreligious. For example, 80 percent of all young Protestants outside of Europe are deeply religious and 18 percent are religious, compared to just seven percent of young Protestants in Europe who are deeply religious, and 25 percent can only be classified as nominal members of their church.

It is a similar picture with young Catholics. Although the proportion of deeply religious Catholics in Europe is 25 percent, outside Europe this figure is 68 percent. Only a third of young people in Eastern Europe and Russia have been christened, and most young people have no connection at all to faith and the Church. Only 13 percent are deeply religious. […]

The diverging picture of the religiousness of young people in different countries and denominations is also reflected in their religious practices. Ninety percent of young adults in devout countries such as Nigeria and Guatemala pray at least once a day, and three out of four of the respondents in countries such as India, Morocco and Turkey do likewise. In contrast, daily prayer is no longer common practice among young Europeans. In France, just nine percent of young adults pray daily, in Russia the figure is eight percent and in Austria only around seven percent.

The great exception among the Western industrialised countries is the United States. What is true for adults in the U.S. also applies to the younger generation: there are many more religious people here than in most other Western countries. Fifty-seven percent of young Americans say that they pray daily. The free-church and Pentecostal Protestants in the U.S. are almost all religious, with almost 90 percent deeply religious. […]

The Bertelsmann Foundation's study also demonstrated a connection between the religious orientation of young people and their attitudes to politics and sexuality.

Religion has no influence on the political views of most Europeans and "Westerners". This also applies to most of the religious young people outside of Europe, albeit not so stringently. The answers were not quite so clear-cut on the issue of sex and relationships. Most young religious Europeans view sex as a private matter and only a minority believe that their religious beliefs influence their sexual relationships.

Religious considerations have an impact on the love lives of just seven percent of young Protestants in Europe, 12 percent of Orthodox believers and 14 percent of Catholics. However, the picture outside of Europe is quite different: here, no less than 67 percent of Protestants and 68 percent of free-church Protestants see a connection between their religious beliefs and sexuality. Catholics outside of Europe are more emancipated in this respect. Only around half (52 percent) say that their personal faith affects their own sexuality.

Tautalos shows some promise.

How can Europeans be strongly religious if the Religion(s) that still dominates Europe is essentially foreign to the European ethnic identities?

Jesus is losing his worshippers in Europe - and that's a sign that European Psyche is awakening.

And then the altars dedicated to Zeus, Jupiter, Taranis, Odin, Perun, Perkunas, will spring everywhere in this continent.

Yet black populations are overwhelmingly Christian or Muslim. I think that high IQ is the critical factor here. We don't need altars to Odin either. We need science and philosophy. Those are the things that made Western civilization advance.

Lol. Western Europe has rejected its Catholic/Christian heritage and is now being invaded by third world primitives/savages.

Sorry; replacing the Christians with the Odinists only results in the destruction of both via the swords of the saracens.

Because the most Catholic parts of Europe have the least immigrants, right? I think the future of the Germanic world is to be nationalistic and irreligious like Estonia.

Western Europe is not being invaded because it has rejected Christianity but because certain of its values(„love thy neighbour as thyself“) live on in the average man, just disconnected from religion and even whatever positive side effects it had, and are mindlessly applied to each and every people, instead of just one’s own.

Apart from this “indirect Christianity”, whatever real Christianity historically was, nowadays both, Christian churches as institutions and their adherents alike, are strongly in favour of accepting each and every immigrant in the name of the second “great” commandment.

They welcome them into their parish houses, they feed them and they protect them from deportation. And they already converted thousands of them to Christianity. They don’t care about folkish belief or race, just about “new sheep for their herd”. They’re praised by the radical left nowadays and that alone, should already get you thinking.

Merkel, daughter of a pastor who moved to the GDR for his belief, of the Christian Democratic Union, after all, explicitly referred to “our” Christian/”democratic” values and beliefs, when she opened the door for each and everyone.

Liberalism and Muslims are like AIDs and a common cold. You can easily cure the cold...unless you have AIDs...

The degree to which Christianity welcomes hostile strangers into its lands is subject to the prevailing social narrative, which in the 20th and 21st centuries has been progressive humanism; this egalitarianism which has seeped into every facet of society including religion itself. Rightly, Christians of the 17th century repulsed Muslims from Europe in the last concerted effort to Islamize the continent. There was no "Refugees Welcome" back then, no human rights advocacy groups, no Marxist saboteurs within the governments.

If the Islamic world had an enlightenment, if it too were coughed forth from the "dark ages" like our enlightened predecessors said we had been, it too would probably have transexuals being lauded in magazines, african migrants flooding their borders shouting "Gib money!", and a collective guilt for past crimes which it seeks to be absolved from by self-flaggelating.

There is something to be said about Christianity though. It wasn't the Church that made us great, it was we who made the Church great. Just look at how "great" other civilizations were who adopted Christianity by comparrison. Whether we were chosen by God to lead it to greatness or the other way around matters not. The Faustian spirit of Europeans is writ large in our DNA. One can see it all throughout history, we could be worshipping Odin or Christ, but if our inner spirit remains true we create great things. If we fail to recognize our potential as we do in the modern world, we will be trampled underfoot by more virile civilizational forces, such as Islam. It's no wonder early Roman-Christians idealized Christ as all powerful Jupiter, seated above the globe, scepter in hand. How Christianity had to be weaponized to appeal to the warlike Germans is telling our our character. Yet it all happened and ultimately to the benefit of Europe. It demonstrates too how tribalism and nationalism can transcend even the most universal of doctrines like Christianity.
